The Executed

Ohio's Executed

In 1972, the United States Supreme Court declared the death penalty to be unconstitutional. The decision reduced the death sentences of 65 Ohio inmates to life in prison.

In 1974, the Ohio General Assembly revised Ohio’s Death Penalty law, but the U.S. Supreme Court rejected the new law in 1978. As a result, 120 condemned prisoners, including four women, had their sentences commuted to life in prison

After drafting a new law to reflect the strict criteria for the imposition of the death sentence, Ohio lawmakers enacted the current capital punishment statute, which took effect October 19, 1981. These are the men who have been executed under what is considered post Furman.

2007 / Murdered by Lethal Injection* Christopher Newton
May 24, 2007
Attention has been riveted to the horribly botched “execution” of Christopher Newton. The execution team took over an hour to fine a vein to suitable enough to kill Newton. In the sixteen minutes he took to die “Newton’s stomach heaved, his chin quivered and twitched, and his body twice mildly convulsed within its restraints. Records show that other Ohio inmates died within an average of 7.5 minutes.” Ohio DoC is saying the execution was not a botch (and therefore will do no follow-up, such as an autopsy) , despite experts opinions to the contrary that it was likely a botch with at least the paralytic agent not having been delivered in sufficient dosage.

January 14, 2004
In January 2004, four guards had to forcibly lift Lewis Williams Jr. from his knees and pry his hand off a table's edge to get him into the death chamber. "I'm not guilty. I'm not guilty. God, please help me," he said as he was strapped down. His last words: "God, please help me. God, please hear my cry."
